7 Evolution Of Smartphones Between 2009 And 2019

When it comes to smartphones, the ten-year interval makes us reflect on the immense advances in the segment.

For those who did not have much contact with gadgets back in 2009,

It is difficult to imagine a world in which not all cell phones were connected to the Wi-Fi network or to devices whose internal memory was only 1GB, for example.

Therefore, we decided to enter the vibe of social networks and bring a #10yearchallenge with a lot of technology

Here we explain the main characteristics of the most famous smartphones of 2009,

And then we tell you a little about what are the developments that these devices had in 2019.

The evolution of smartphones is beautiful.

Shall we check? 🙂

Physical keyboard versus virtual keyboard

It may sound curious, but one of the main features among smartphone models from ten years ago was the presence of the physical QWERTY keyboard.

The BlackBerry, famous just for its keyboard, had the first model launched in 2009 and was one of the best-selling phones of the time.

The device was initially designed for great executives, but it fell in the teenagers’ taste since it facilitated the exchange of text messages, a resource that started to become extremely common.

Soon, several brands also decided to bet on models of devices with a physical keyboard, mainly Nokia and Motorola, for example.

But we know that things are a little different today. The truth is that today it is extremely difficult to find devices with the physical QWERTY keyboard.

Some brands even launched one or two test models with the flip body, another classic brand of cell phones from ten years ago, but none really got the public’s favor.

In 2019, smartphone keyboards were all digital and easily adapt to user screens and other personalized settings – and, in our opinion, the best part is the emoticons! 🙂

Wi-Fi and online connection

Another feature that may frighten current users is that in 2009 it was extremely common to find cell phones without support for the wireless internet network.

Only a few models, considered top of the line, had the option to connect as a Wi-Fi network.

The iPhone 3s, launched that year, was the first model from Apple to offer 3G technology.

Therefore, many of the models used at the time even had an internet connection, but still used 2G technology, which allowed the exchange of messages and photos by SMS.

In 2019, the 4G network was one of the most common among smartphone users

This type of connection, in addition to being much faster, prioritizes data traffic, such as photos, audios, videos and texts on the internet.

There are also those who believe that the diffusion of 4G + or 4.5G is close!

In this case, the difference would be the emphasis on speed, since this technology would use different frequency bands to transmit data.

Touch experience

In 2009, technology giants like Nokia took the first steps towards replacing resistive screens.

At the time, the first touch screens were not very sensitive to touch, since they were composed of a series of layers.

Therefore, when touching the cell phone screen, it was necessary to exert some force, which compromised the user experience.

The capacitive screen, which starts to be the center of some studies in the area, allows not only more smoothness to the touch but also ensures that the device understands more than one touch at the same time, providing the pinch movement for zoom in and zoom out, for example.

But today’s users are very used to soft screens, aren’t they?

Currently, many brands have been innovating and bringing screens extremely sensitive to touch in devices that are fullscreen.

It is extremely common to find a series of models without buttons on its front.

It is also possible to find a series of smartphones with OLED technology, such as the iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, further improving the definition of the graphics and the colors of the images projected on the screen.

Android system

Despite being extremely difficult to imagine a world without the Android system, the software was still celebrating a year of the market launch in 2009.

In partnership with the company HTC, Google had launched the G1, the first device with the system.

During that year, Google also launched the Android 1.5 Cupcake version, which brought support for Bluetooth and a virtual keyboard, followed by Android 1.6 Donut, with a quick search box and, finally, Android 2.0 Eclair, which would offer navigation in the Maps app and convert voice to text.

This year, Google presents Android 9 Pie, with a series of practical innovations.

In addition to better use of the battery, the new system optimizes the user’s gestures and brings greater practicality to everyday life.

The version also presents a series of new functions related to the user’s well-being, such as timers that determine the time that you can spend in an app daily, for example.

There is also a significant improvement in the security and usability of the system.

Photo cameras

Now it’s time to make photo fans fall out of their seats!

Ten years ago, cell phones had, on average, cameras between 2 and 5 megapixels.

The smartphones that offered better cameras were few and usually had higher prices.

This is the case of Sony Ericsson Satio and Omnia HD, from Samsung, with 12 and 8 megapixels, respectively.

In addition, the front cameras were also not common in many devices, and in those where it was present, its use was indicated only for video calls.

Nowadays, things have changed a little bit.

The quality of the images produced by smartphones has increased considerably, and it is possible to find cell phones even with three rear cameras.

It is worth noting that some devices, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S9, come with augmented reality technology, for example.

Therefore, it is extremely common to find cell phones whose main camera has up to 12 megapixels – and the possibility to change the lens aperture when making the click.

Thus, it is possible to click a photo with impressive quality using your cell phone instead of a professional camera.

The novelty is that the latest models also bring powerful selfie cameras, not only in relation to the definition of images but also with an aperture angle even greater than the traditional one, which avoids the suffocation when taking a photo with the crowd.

RAM and internal storage

Typically, most models had 128MB RAM, and the storage capacity was quite variable.

On simpler devices, the memory was 1GB, while slightly more expensive smartphones offered up to 8GB of memory.

However, more robust models, such as the iPhone 3Gs or Nokia N900, were highlighted due to their 256MB RAM and 32GB of storage.

In recent years, smartphones have been drawing a trend that is expected to remain strong among 2019 models.

Currently, mid-priced devices have a 6GB RAM with 64GB storage.

The differentials, of course, are the most expensive models and considered top of the line.

In this case, it is possible to find cell phones with more RAM and storage space for data.

Charging: from wires to NFC

Forgetting the cell phone charger was a problem 10 years ago.

The lack of standard connectors, even among models of the same brand, was extremely common.

However, nowadays, Android phones standardized their charger outputs using a standard mini-USB.

The same goes for most Apple models – many have equal charging entries.

The innovation of 2019, then, lies in the increasingly common use of wireless technologies to charge mobile phones.

Today it is possible to charge the device by leaving it close to a special base, whose main functionality is the possibility to charge any type of cell phone.

I love the idea of the evolution of smartphones.

What did you think of the news that the last ten years have brought to smartphones?

Would you be able to live without access to 4G or without taking that cool selfie with your friends?

The technology of the sector is advancing more and more, and we can certainly expect even greater innovations over the next few years!
